How to make a Cast of a Pawprint in Cement

How to make a Cast of a Pawprint in Cement

Author : Michelle Williams

I recently had a message from a customer who has a concrete floor in their garage with some pawprints in and they would like to know how to conserve the pawprints.

I get tons of inquries every week from people who have paw prints of their pets in concrete, who either wish to preseve the pawprints when they move house, or when building work or prpperty reonovation requires them to pull up the concrete floors.

If you have ever wanted to know how to make a copy of pawprints in concrete, or make dog pawprint stepping stones in cement, silicone or plaster, here are a few quick and easy instructions.

Plaster Method:

  1. Clean the pawprints and area of concrete that you wish to make a mould of.
  2. Apply a generous layer of vaseline or car polishing wax to the paw prints and area of concrete that you wish to make a mould of. (This will act as a release agent, to prevent the plaster from sticking to the concrete).
  3. Use some sturdy board or cardboard to build a container wall (around 2 inch deep) around the pawprints and area of concrete that you wish to make a copy of.
  4. Use glue a glue gun or duck tape to seal the bottom of the wall, to prevent any plaster from leaking out.
  5. Mix up the Plaster of Paris according to manufacturers instructions and pour into the pawprints.
  6. Allow to cure and harden for about an hour.
  7. Carefully remove the wall and lift off the plaster pawprints from the concrete floor.
  8. You now have a negative mould of the pawprints which will be raised instead of imprinted.
  9. You can now use the negative mould to make a new impression in cement or plaster of paris.  (Simply apply a thin layer of vaseline onto the plaster pawprints, build a container wall and repeat the whole process).

Silicone Method:

  1. Buy a suitable Silicone moulding compound and Release Agent.
  2. Clean the pawprints and area of concrete that you wish to make a mould of.
  3. Apply a generous layer of release agent to the paw prints and area of concrete that you wish to make a cast of. (This will act as a release agent, to prevent the siilcone from sticking to the concrete).
  4. Use some cardboard to build a small container wall (around 2 inch deep) around the pawprints and area of concrete that you wish to make a copy of.
  5. Use a glue gun or duck tape to seal the bottom of the wall, to prevent any plaster from leaking out.
  6. Mix up the Silicone according to manufacturers instructions and pour into the pawprints.
  7. Allow to cure and harden as per manufacturers instructions.
  8. Carefully remove the wall and lift off the Silcone pawprints from the concrete.
  9. You now have a negative mould of the pawprints which will be raised instead of imprinted.
  10. You now have a press mould from which you make make as many paw print impressions as you like.
